I’ve always loved visual story telling.
Being an Introvert, seeing how an art piece or photograph could convey a story or strong emotion without words …
It was magic.
Much like the stories in all my library books, a single photograph could rapture me to a far off place, lose myself in a moment of time, or have resound empathy.
In 6th grade, at 12 years old, I was given my first camera. A simple Canon SLR with a kit lens, that was all I needed to believe I would grow up to be a National Geographic photographer basically living out of my imaginary red Jeep Wrangler. My “documentary style” was awkward and clumsy. By my freshman year, I let go of working for National Geographic, but dreamed of publishing my own book of poetry and photographs. I spent my high school years with either a pen or a camera in my hand. My four years working on the school’s yearbook allowed me to finesse my photojournalistic style, capturing those everyday moments that go by almost unnoticed. These years created the foundation for working on and for my college’s publications: the student directory, the newspaper, and of course, the yearbook.
The biggest surprise that photojournalism brought me, wasn’t the year I worked for a small town newspaper publication when I took a year off of college. It was that it became a stepping stone to working with and falling in love with my partner, Ruwan. Upon returning to college to finish my degree, I found myself yet again working for the college’s publications office. Much to my delight, Ruwan was working there also. We worked just as well together, clocked in with cameras in hand, or happy clocked out, hand in hand. When it came to photography, we are well balanced; Ruwan setting up the lights, photographing beautiful portraits, of the bride and groom for example - while I get to tip toe around the venue and capture toddlers under the tables or grandmother dabbing her tears of joy.
Over the years, we have decorated our home and shared pictures we have taken online. Sometimes we even got paid to photograph a coworker's high school senior graduate or traveled to photograph a friend's wedding. At the end of the 2024 school year, Ruwan stepped away from teaching Science and started planning the foundation that became Ruwan and Diana Photography. 2025 has become the year we see what develops during our newest adventure: Business Owners | Photo Studio Edition.
